Pre-Kindergarten - Growing a Strong Future

2021-22 Pre-K Program

  • Half days (am or pm)
  • Children born in 2017 with mild, moderate or severe needs, or those who are cognitively advanced/gifted are eligible to qualify
  • Children born in 2018 with a significant need and are Program Unit Funded (PUF) are eligible to qualify 
  • If your child does not qualify for Pre-K programing as per Alberta Education guidelines, attending as a Play Partner may be considered
  • Additional programming hours/full days may be available for Pre-K children

Qualifying for Pre-K 

  • Complete the Pre-K Intake Form
  • Book a screening appointment through Central Office, 780.939.4341 ext. 1257
  • Screenings begin in March 2021
  • Child must be accompanied by a legal guardian at the screening appointment
  • Child may be assessed by a Sturgeon Public Schools Speech Language Pathologist, Occupational Therapist or Educational Psychologist for a STURGEON PUBLIC SCHOOLS PRE-K PROGRAM ONLY
  • Assessment results from other agencies such as Alberta Health Services or private agencies are also considered and reviewed for qualification

  • Speech Language Pathologists
  • Occupational Therapists
  • Therapy Assistants

Importance of Pre-K Programming

  • Scientific research shows that learning, brain development, mental health and physical health development is rapid in early childhood
  • Early learning programs help enhance language skills, emotional control, peer social skills, literacy and numeracy
  • Early childhood development and intervention sets the course for a child's future and largely determines how well children will do later in school

Curriculum

Pre-K curriculum is based on an adapted version of the Creative Curriculum for Preschool Children
